Kisah Nabi Yusuf as. memang masyhur seperti yang didapati dalam Al-Quran dan kitab-kitab Kristian dan Yahudi. Selain itu, hikayat ini juga kelihatannya cuba menyesuaikan latar kisah dengan suasana tempatan seperti nasi sebagai makanan dan harimau ganti serigala.
Eloklah difahami tentang hikayat itu sendiri dalam tradisi bangsa Melayu umumnya. Hikayat berasal daripada bahasa Arab bermaksud cerita. Kerana itu kita dapati sesebuah hikayat biasanya dimulai dengan kata, "Konon", "Kata sahibul hikayat", "dikonon orang" dan yang sejenisnya. Ini perlu dijelaskan agar tidak ada yang menerima bulat-bulat dan tidak juga menolak mentah-mentah. Kebiasaan hikayat memang bercampur aduk antara kisah yang benar dan rekaan.

The original manuscript of Hikayat Nabi Allah Yusuf was written by Muhammad Labai/Lebai in Perlis in 1802. It is now kept in the British Library, London.
The story of Prophet Yusuf. indeed famous as found in the Quran and Christian and Jewish books. In addition, this story also seems to try to adapt the setting of the story to the local atmosphere such as rice as food and tigers instead of wolves.
It is good to understand about the story itself in the Malay tradition in general. Hikayat comes from Arabic meaning story. Because of that we find that a story usually starts with the words, "Konon", "Kata sahibul hikayat", "it is said that people" and the like. This needs to be explained so that no one accepts outright and does not reject outright. It is common for stories to be mixed between true and fictional stories.
